Unique benefits for employers

Kingston offers a unique delivery model with apprentices working in two maternity provider sites. The apprentices will spend their first year and a different site to years two and three. The employer will decide at which point in the programme the apprentice is based with them i.e. the first year or years two and three.

Annual leave can be flexible for apprentices   but can only be taken when allocated to practice. There are eight weeks each year of the programme that are given back to the employer to cover annual leave and other activities the employer feels are necessary. Career opportunities and development for existing Trust staff.

Middlesex University

BSc Midwifery (Hons) (Apprenticeship)

(Launching September 2026)

36 months

Delivery approach

Delivered through a blended model, combining face-to-face teaching, online learning, simulation training, and independent study. University teaching days focus on lectures, workshops, and clinical skills, while protected off-the-job time allows learners to engage flexibly with asynchronous activities. Clinical placements are integrated throughout, ensuring apprentices apply theory directly to practice in NHS Trusts, preparing them for confident and safe midwifery registration

Unique benefits for employers

Enables employers to grow their own midwifery workforce by upskilling staff who are already embedded within maternity services. Apprentices quickly contribute to service delivery while developing professional competence, increasing workforce retention and reducing recruitment costs. The programme also supports diversity, widening participation, and strengthens local workforce sustainability aligned with national maternity transformation priorities. A new learning framework approach has been adopted to space out assessments to reduce pressure and ensure apprentices can balance academic requirements with their clinical responsibilities.
