Delivery approach
This programme provides a consistent scheduled structure of off the job learning delivered in a pattern of online learning and on campus face to face learning to provide the apprentice with opportunities to access consistent support and theoretical development on a weekly basis.
The delivery will aim to foster an apprentice learning community which will offer peer support and opportunities to learn from each other’s experiences. The face-to-face activity will utilise the university facilities for simulated learning and teaching activities.
Off the job opportunities are also offered in a flexible format to include directed study, self-directed study and clinical placements (to equate to 1000 clinical hours over the 3 year programme). This facilitates the learner to individualise their learning journey which is sensitive to their needs, other learners, and service delivery in imaging departments. This learning can be planned in collaboration with their Workplace Mentor to ensure they maximise opportunities to gain high quality clinical placement and protected study time, which recognises the learner’s supernumerary status. This approach supports the widening participation agenda and enables the apprentice to personalise their own learning journey, study, work, and life commitments
Unique benefits for employers
The programme has been co designed and co-produced with employers.
All our Apprenticeship Coaches are registered radiographers.
The programme builds on the strengths of the existing undergraduate programme whilst recognising the unique demands and requirements for apprenticeship programme delivery.
The progress of an apprentice is reviewed at the 12 weekly progress review meetings, attended by the Apprentice, Apprenticeship Coach from the university and the Employer’s Workplace Mentor.
The programme aims to produce diagnostic radiography graduates who will be curious, confident, autonomous practitioners, who are digitally agile with strong inter-personal, leadership and collaborative skills and who can provide compassionate, evidence based, person centred care across the lifespan of the service user.
UH received a good rating from Ofsted in June 2024 the report commended the university for its “expertly given” practical and pastoral support in partnership with employers, which the report said is highly valued by apprentices.
Ofsted also stated that apprentices at Herts are highly positive towards their education and job roles. They develop “character and confidence” as a result of their studies, and become “more reflective and resilient to challenges, change and setbacks” through their time at the University.
The report further praised Herts for its links with businesses and partners to meet regional skills needs, as well as its variety of teaching and learning opportunities, including practical experiences.
