Radiographer – Therapeutic
Providing excellent care to patients diagnosed with cancer by delivering high quality and accurate radiotherapy.
This occupation is found in the health and care sector and includes the NHS and private healthcare providers.
The occupation’s broad purpose is to provide excellent care to people diagnosed with cancer by delivering high quality and accurate radiotherapy, considering patients’ emotional, psychological, and physical needs through the stages of their cancer treatment when at times they may be extremely vulnerable. They are responsible for the individual from the time of referral for radiotherapy by a cancer specialist and will prepare radiotherapy patients for treatment, including scanning and planning the patients’ radiotherapy.

Innovative, learner-focused apprenticeship uses a diverse range of face-to-face and online teaching, learning and assessment methods specifically developed to meet needs of apprentices and employers close to and distant from the university.
Apprentices will graduate with the skills to administer radiotherapy treatment, assess and interpret pre-treatment scans and undertake comprehensive treatment planning.
They graduate as a fully qualified, reflective and confident Therapeutic Radiographer and become eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR).
UH received a good rating from Ofsted in June 2024 the report commended the university for its “expertly given” practical and pastoral support in partnership with employers, which the report said is highly valued by apprentices.
Ofsted also stated that apprentices at Herts are highly positive towards their education and job roles. They develop “character and confidence” as a result of their studies, and become “more reflective and resilient to challenges, change and setbacks” through their time at the University.
The report further praised Herts for its links with businesses and partners to meet regional skills needs, as well as its variety of teaching and learning opportunities, including practical experiences.

Radiotherapy is a fast-evolving field and our cutting-edge technology, including our Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT), a working CT scanner and radiotherapy planning system will ensure that learners stay at the forefront of the industry throughout the apprenticeship and beyond.
